New Moon in Sagittarius, Dec 16th, 2009

Breaking Free

The Sun and Moon are in freedom-loving Sagittarius at this New Moon. They are just two degrees off the Galactic Center (26 degrees), the apparent source of wild, humanity-altering energies. The spirit of this lunation is cracking open to the fresh, youthful, alive. The Archer is physical, engaged with life first-hand, and curious to know more. This is a time of personal truth, as the established "reality" gets a violent shake-up. The visions that flash may be signs of what's to come in 2010. But be prepared for a few surprises that rock your worldview.

Trusting Life

This New Moon in Sagittarius asks us to keep our gaze fixed on the hopeful horizon, even as we're dodging flying debris. It's a mixed bag, with many celestial high points, as well as some energy of breaking apart. We may lose our bearings, as the foundation gives way beneath our feet. But in the midst of major changes, you can use the gift of the multi-directional Archer to adjust your compass. It's about communion with faith in life, no matter what happens.

Here we find the Sun, Moon and Venus (art, beauty, love) together . Sagittarian optimism comes from feeling part of life's forward motion. It's a youthful, spontaneous kind of mood, that's the joyful knowing that you're on your true path. It's a great time to get away from the computer, and do something that brings color to your cheeks. It's the joy of doing that's key now.

A New Re-Generation

There's a heightened animation at the new Moon, with vibrant Mars in Leo in a trine to the planets in Sagittarius (Sun-Moon-Venus). This rockets you into celebrating your uniqueness, and finding creative outlets to express who you are. It's the dynamism of youth, and the childlike trust that you have something meaningful to offer. This pushes us to be active, rather than passive, in our lives. And to go after the heart's desire, since doing that makes you feel like you're on your right path.

There's a passing of the torch feel to this New Moon in Sagittarius. It's time for the old patriarchs and the "elite" to surrender their power to a new paradigm. In this time of epic transition, the media often promote the future visions of "globalists," mostly absurdly rich old guys. This New Moon shows the cracks are appearing that will allow new light and hope to emerge. The old entrenched models of patriarchy -- the amoral CEO, the bought politician, the old money philanthropist-visionary -- have to die, so the new can be born. In her New Moon post , Jungian astrologer Cathy Pagano writes, "Do we use our remarkable creativity and imagination to keep the old king propped up, or do we let him die so new life and a new philosophy about life can emerge?"

Traveling Light

Sagittarius is a mutable sign that has the dexterity to shift to changing conditions. That's useful, since the three planets in this fiery sign are in a shattering square to Uranus. There's a rearranging of the pieces going on, as jobs, relationships, homes, even perceptions of reality, are all on shaky ground. It's a challenge to be flexible when these shockwaves hit, and let go of what's being loosened in your life.

Since Uranus is a major player at this New Moon, there's an element of unpredictability. The new ideas and truthtelling that's happening is hard on the collective heart. It breaks us open. It can stun us and makes us paralyzed with the fear of uncertainty. But if we can find our sense of adventure, we can see ourselves as players in a great drama, one that has historic meaning for humanity.

The New Being Born

All that riled up Sagittarius energy meets the Jupiter-Neptune silver lining of the cloud we're moving through. That sends currents of enthusiasm through us, so we can act on any genius ideas that come out of the blue. New Moons are a time to go within and dream. And in the dark of winter, it's a moment for dreaming of a future worth living for. These two signs are idealistic and oriented toward the collective.

It's timely for brainstorming with colleagues or artistic collaborators. But it's also just right for solo musing on your personal vision. What core values do you wish to see brought out into the world through your creations?
